On page 123 of the 9th edition NERO handbook, under the science section it states:

"There are
compasses and navigational materials for traveling but PC’s aren’t
allowed to bring and use them.
"

I am curious about why this is and if there are any exceptions to this statement. I have a good deal of experience at various LARPs, and running modules etc and I understand that on some modules, understanding your heading/azimuth in relation to your map location may not coincide with where you are supposed to be in a game world.

The use of a map and compass may add to some role-play and combat experiences, especially in an open warfare/skirmish type event when things like troop movements are important.

Any discussion or clarification on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

The only reason I remember is someone had a very expensive set that was smashed in a module and ....down the chain of time this came out of it shrouded in breaking disbelief.

That is interesting. So I may be able to talk with my home game staff and possibly find an exception?

It also could be that the compasses available IG are only on ships, and are the size of a large bucket.

Thinking on this one over the weekend, trying to remember back this was also before the age of cellphones and pocket devices that had glorious glorious apps.

So obviously cellphones are out of the question. If I was playing a character with a map making skill and I used an actual compass and ruler and such and created my own maps, would that significantly break the game, or not keep with the overall feel of the game?
